A Quick Hike to Karloo Pools

Royal National Park

Karloo Pools is one of those hikes I keep coming back to. It’s short, steep in sections, and ends at a beautiful waterhole surrounded by bushland. If you’re after a quick nature escape with a bit of a workout and a peaceful spot to unwind at the end, this one’s hard to beat.

The best part is how easy it is to get to. You can step off the train at Heathcote Station and be on the trail within minutes. The first short section passes through a residential area before reaching the bush. The track is clearly marked and easy to follow the whole way.

It starts off gently then gets steeper as you descend. Expect uneven terrain, rocks, and a few natural steps. It’s not technical, but you’ll feel the climb on the way back up. The trail is popular so it’s well maintained and safe to do solo.

Once you reach the pools, you’ll see why they’re so loved. The water is clear and cold year-round, surrounded by smooth rock platforms and dense forest. It’s a great place to rest, dip your feet in, and enjoy the quiet before heading back up. The rocks can be slippery, so take care near the edges.

Weekdays or early mornings are best if you want a bit of quiet. It can get busy on weekends, especially in summer.

I’ve done this track as a quick afternoon walk, as training with a loaded pack, and just to unwind in nature for a few hours. It’s easy to access by train, has that proper bush feel, and always feels like a mini adventure.
