Breadknife and Grand High Tops Walk & Camping at Camp Blackman

Warrumbungle National Park

The Breadknife and Grand High Tops Circuit in Warrumbungle National Park is one of the most rewarding day hikes in NSW. The 15 km loop packs in steep climbs, sweeping lookouts and some of the most dramatic volcanic scenery in the state.

You’ll pass towering rock spires, sheer cliffs and rugged ridgelines shaped by an ancient volcano millions of years ago. The trail climbs through open forest before revealing views over formations like the Breadknife, Belougery Spire and Crater Bluff, all lined up across the skyline. It’s the kind of landscape that feels completely different to anywhere else in NSW.

The circuit takes around 4 to 6 hours with about 700 metres of elevation gain. It’s a solid hike but well marked and easy to follow. Every climb rewards you with another incredible view, making the effort completely worth it.

Camping at Camp Blackman

We camped at Camp Blackman, around 7 minutes from the trailhead. It’s a great base for exploring the park with toilets, hot showers, fire pits and plenty of space. You’ll often see kangaroos around camp, and booking ahead is recommended through the NSW National Parks website. It’s one of the more comfortable campgrounds while still feeling surrounded by nature.

If you’d rather camp closer to the trail, there are a few remote walk-in sites along the route, including Balor Hut and Ogma Gap. These two need to be booked in advance, but they’re ideal if you want to turn the hike into an overnight trip.

Evenings at Camp Blackman are so peaceful, with hot food by the fire, quiet surroundings and clear skies filled with stars. Warrumbungle is Australia’s first Dark Sky Park, and the stargazing here is incredible. Bring warm clothes in winter and extra water in summer.

Getting There

If you’re driving from Sydney, it’s about 6 hours to Coonabarabran, the gateway to Warrumbungle National Park. The trailhead is at the end of Pincham Road off John Renshaw Parkway, and all roads are sealed.

Final Thoughts

The Breadknife and Grand High Tops Walk is one of the best hikes in NSW. Pair it with a night or two at Camp Blackman for the perfect weekend trip filled with great views, starry skies and simple moments around the campfire.
