Forest Path and Palona Caves

Royal National Park

The Forest Path and Palona Caves track is an easy 8 km walk in Royal National Park that takes you through lush rainforest, limestone caves and a small waterfall. With about 200 metres of elevation, it’s an enjoyable 2 to 3 hour hike that’s perfect for anyone who loves a mix of forest, rock formations and a bit of adventure.

The walk starts from Lady Carrington Drive. Look out for the sign to Palona Cave, which leads off the main track about 1.6 km in. The short side trail is worth it, with a small waterfall flowing over the cave entrance and limestone formations inside that make it one of the more unique spots in the park. The path can be a little overgrown in places, so take care as you make your way down.

After visiting the caves, return to the main track and continue onto the Forest Path. This section of the walk winds through beautiful subtropical forest with tall palms, hanging vines and thick green ferns. It’s a calm, shaded walk that feels far away from everything.

If you’re hiking with kids or just want a shorter loop, the Forest Path on its own is around 4 km and an easy yet beautiful option.

It’s best to visit after rain when the forest is at its greenest and the waterfall at Palona Cave is flowing well. The ground can be muddy and you'll often find leeches, but the light through the canopy and the rich colours of the forest make it worth it.

Quiet, peaceful and full of variety, this track is one of the best easy walks in Royal National Park for anyone who wants caves, rainforest and a bit of hidden magic all in one hike.
