Hike to the Ruined Castle

Blue Mountains National Park

Ruined Castle is one of the most popular hikes out of Katoomba, and it's an easy one to recommend. It's a 9km return walk out to a rocky outcrop sitting in the middle of the Jamison Valley, with 360-degree views from the top. If you want a proper valley hike with a real payoff at the end, but you're not ready to commit to a massive day, this is a great pick.

Allow 3.5 to 5 hours depending on how long you take at the top. The first 30 minutes is a steep descent down the Golden Stairs into the valley. After that it flattens out and stays mostly flat through good bush until you reach Ruined Castle itself. To get to the top you'll find a few pathways leading up to the rocks, and it's not the first couple you come to. The easiest way up is through a gap you squeeze between two rocks. It's a small scramble, nothing technical, you'll just need your hands for the last bit.

The views up top are the reason you come. Mt Solitary sits right in front of you and the valley opens up in both directions. Take your time up there.

A few practical things. It's a popular track, so don't expect to have it to yourself, especially on weekends. There's no water on the trail, so carry enough for the day. Wear proper shoes, the terrain is rough in places. The track is well marked and easy to follow, but download an offline map just in case. As of now Glenraphael Drive is closed, so you park on Cliff Drive near Narrow Neck Lookout and walk a section along Narrow Neck to reach the start. If you're coming from Sydney without a car, it's about 4km from Katoomba Station.

If you're after your first taste of a Blue Mountains valley hike, or just a solid half-day with a good reward at the end, Ruined Castle is one of the best for it.
