Perrys Lookdown to Blue Gum Forest

Blue Mountains National Park

If you’re after a steep, leg-burning hike with views that make it all worth it, the track from Perrys Lookdown to Blue Gum Forest is one to add to your list.

It’s around 6 km return, or 8 km if you continue to Acacia Flats Campground. The trail drops about 600 m into the valley in such a short distance, which makes it feel even steeper on the way back up. It’s rated hard, but the path is clear the whole way, so you can focus on the climb instead of worrying about navigation.

From Perrys Lookdown, the track dives straight down through open forest into the heart of the Blue Gum Forest, surrounded by towering gums and the sound of birds. The descent feels endless, but it’s a good reminder of how far you’ll need to climb later.

At the bottom, you’ll reach the Grose River, where the forest opens up into a peaceful clearing. It’s a great spot for lunch or a quick dip if it’s warm. If you’re camping, Acacia Flats Campground is about 500 m further along and easy to find. Just remember to book ahead through the NSW National Parks website.

The climb back out is where the real work begins. It’s short but brutal, and your legs will feel every step. I always find myself doing this track when I’m training for a longer hike because it’s such a good test of endurance and leg strength. Once you reach the top again, the view over the valley makes the effort completely worth it.

Whether you do it as a day hike or stay overnight, this one always feels rewarding.
