The Vale of Avoca is one of those walks that feels like a hidden gem. The track takes you down to the Grose River, with quiet lookouts at the start and a peaceful riverside spot at the bottom. It’s short, not too difficult, and perfect if you want something different in the Blue Mountains.
The walk begins on a wide fire trail before narrowing into a rougher path. The descent is steady and straightforward, with some eroded sections but nothing tricky. On the way back you’ll feel the climb, but it’s much easier than other descents into the Grose.
Before heading down, take the time to stop at the lookouts. They’re unfenced, but the views into the Grose Valley are spectacular. Forested ridges and sandstone cliffs stretch out in every direction, and it’s often completely quiet.
At the bottom, the river is clear with sandy banks and rocky outcrops. I walked upstream where the water deepens and stayed for hours, sitting next to the water. It felt untouched and wild, yet only a short walk from the trailhead.
I parked at the starting point listed on AllTrails, but you can actually drive further in. There were a few cars parked there, which shortens the walk if you’d rather skip the extra stretch.
The Vale of Avoca is a great choice if you’re after a shorter walk with both views and a chance to swim. It’s easy to reach, not very busy, and one I’d definitely recommend.
