If you're after a weekend away that doesn't require a lot of planning, Lake Lyell is worth knowing about. It's 2.5 hours from Sydney, campfires are allowed, the lake is genuinely beautiful, and if you get there early enough, the unreserved campground is peaceful in a way that most Sydney-accessible camping spots aren't.
We went with no real agenda, which turned out to be the right call.
Getting There
Lake Lyell is just outside Lithgow, on the edge of the greater Blue Mountains. It's a straight run down the Great Western Highway, roughly 2.5 hours depending on where you're coming from. No dirt roads, no complicated access.
The Campground
There are two sections: the reserved waterfront sites and the unreserved campground on the opposite side of the lake. We stayed unreserved, and I'd recommend it, especially on a weekend.
The reserved section fills up fast and gets noisy. You could hear it from across the water, which says enough. The unreserved side is first-come, first-served. You pull up, register at the main campground office, then drive over and find your own spot. No booking system, no predetermined site number. Just pick your patch.
It was more spread out and relaxed. The trade-off is you miss the shower block and a few other facilities from the main campground, but if you're car camping, you can live without it for two nights.

What the Lake Is Like
Still and calm. The kind of place where waking up in the morning actually feels worth it.
We had fog rolling over the hills at sunrise and ducks nearby most of the day. By evening we had a campfire going and didn't really need anything else. There's something about lake camping that feels more settled than bush camping, easier to actually slow down.
It's a good spot if you want to properly rest, not just pack in activities.

What to Do
On the lake: swimming, kayaking, and fishing are all easy options. Bring your own gear, there's a boat ramp if you're launching anything.
If you want to explore further, the area around Lithgow and the Central Tablelands is underrated. Worth adding to the trip:
- Glow Worm Tunnel: old railway tunnel in Wollemi National Park, around 30-40 minutes away. Go at dusk or after dark.
- Lost City: sandstone formations in Gardens of Stone National Park. Surreal landscape, genuinely worth it.
- Gardens of Stone: good day walk, strong views.
- Zig Zag Railway: historic railway above Lithgow. Easy to combine if you're already in the area.
You could use Lake Lyell as a base and spend the whole weekend exploring without driving far.

Yes. It's the right kind of easy. Close enough that it's not a big commitment, far enough that you actually feel like you've gotten away. The unreserved side is genuinely peaceful if you pick your spot well, and having campfires allowed makes the evenings properly good.
If you're within 2.5 hours of Sydney and haven't found a camping spot that sticks, this one is worth trying.
